Skin fade vs taper — which cut suits you?

Two of the most-requested cuts at our Yardley shop. They look similar in a photo but wear differently in real life. Here's how we help clients in Birmingham choose the right one.

Skin Fade

  • Blends down to bare skin at the sides and back
  • Sharpest, cleanest contrast — great with longer hair on top
  • Needs a refresh every 2–3 weeks to stay crisp
  • Bold, modern look — popular for weddings, events, fresh starts

Taper

  • Gradually shortens around the ears and neckline, never to skin
  • Subtle, natural finish — smart for work and formal settings
  • Grows out softly — comfortable every 3–5 weeks
  • Classic barbering — timeless with any hair length

How to choose

Choose a skin fade if you want the sharpest, most modern finish, don't mind visiting every 2–3 weeks, and want a strong contrast with the length on top.

Choose a taper if you want a smart, understated look that grows out gracefully, keeps some length around the sides, and works in every setting from the office to a night out.

Not sure? Come in and tell us how you style your hair and how often you like to visit — we'll recommend the right one for your hair type and lifestyle.

FAQs

Which lasts longer, a fade or a taper?

A taper. Because a taper never goes to skin, the grow-out is much softer — most clients stretch it to 4–5 weeks. A skin fade looks its best in the first 2–3 weeks before the contrast softens.

Which suits my face shape better?

Skin fades add height and sharpness, which flatters round or square faces. Tapers keep more volume around the sides, which balances longer or oval faces. In-chair we'll advise based on your hair type and how you style it day-to-day.

Can I have a taper on top and a fade on the sides?

Yes — that's essentially what a modern fade haircut is. We tailor the height of the fade (low, mid or high) and blend it into the length you want on top.

Is a fade more expensive than a taper?

At Prestige Barbers the pricing is the same for a standard haircut whether you go fade or taper. See live prices and book on our Booksy page.
